99-year-old British woman makes historic wing-walk: for charity and in defiance of age
Inspired by 97-year-old Betty Bromage—whom she saw featured on the television news—Helga Duffy decided to take the extreme step of riding on the wing of a plane.
The event took place at the RFC Rendcomb airfield in the English county of Gloucestershire. The pensioner was secured with special harnesses to the top of a small aircraft before it took to the skies.
By her own account, she felt no fear; instead, she was filled with excitement and anticipation for the new experience. Her nieces, who were present to watch the daring act, shared that their aunt had long dreamed of doing something extraordinary to prove that age is no barrier to an active life.
Helga Duffy dedicated her record-breaking effort to charity. Her determination helped raise more than £1,300 for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. After landing, representatives from the Guinness World Records presented her with a certificate officially confirming her achievement.
However, Duffy’s record may not stand for long. 97-year-old Betty Bromage, who has already performed six wing-walking flights, congratulated her rival and promised to reclaim the title when she turns 100.
