Scientists at the University of Virginia have developed a non-invasive medical strategy to fight glioblastoma, one of the deadliest and most aggressive forms of brain cancer. The experimental procedure combines high-precision focused ultrasound waves with tiny biocompatible nanoparticles to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier. This mechanism creates a crucial window of opportunity, allowing therapeutic genetic molecules known as microRNAs to reach the brain tissue and simultaneously shut down multiple cancer-driving genes, significantly slowing tumor growth in early trials.
