Meteorologists have detected a record-breaking atmospheric anomaly high above the Arctic. An exceptionally early “Sudden Stratospheric Warming” (SSW) event has severely weakened the stratospheric polar vortex. Wind speeds that usually average 58 mph for this time of year have plummeted to a historic low of just 9 mph. While this massive disruption typically triggers immediate fears of severe Arctic freezes pushing down into lower latitudes, climate scientists note that a record-breaking El NiƱo might clash with this pattern, creating a volatile and highly unpredictable transition into the winter season.
