Geologists tracking northern ecosystems have identified an entirely new category of large-scale terrain collapse, officially termed a permafrost detachment slide. Investigating a massive landslide in Canada’s Mackenzie Valley that blocked whole river structures, researchers proved that the combination of intensifying summer heatwaves and ancient forest fires is causing deep layers of frozen soil to completely destabilize. Unlike typical surface erosion, these massive failures shear off entire layers of subterranean ice, posing a significant, unpredictable threat to infrastructure and river systems across the rapidly warming global Arctic.
