This marks the eighth time Spain has claimed the continental title. Portugal had been the champion in the two preceding European tournaments.
In the contest for third place, Croatia triumphed over France following a penalty shootout (final score 5-5, penalties 6-5). This result earns the Croatian team its first-ever European Championship medals.
