
The European Space Agency (ESA), in collaboration with the Airbus corporation, has reported the successful validation of a novel laser communication system intended to supersede conventional radio waves. These trials were executed in the airspace above Nîmes, France.
A dedicated piece of equipment named the UltraAir terminal, fitted onto an aircraft, managed to establish a link with the Alphasat TDP-1 satellite, which resides in a geostationary orbit approximately 36,000 kilometers away from our planet. Even with the aircraft traveling at high velocity, contending with cloud cover and atmospheric interference, the system maintained a reliable data pipeline for several minutes.
Current radio pathways are facing congestion due to the proliferation of satellites, additionally making them susceptible to interference and interception. Laser communication offers a solution to these inherent weaknesses. During the reported test, a data transfer rate of 2.6 Gbit/s was achieved. This capacity enables, for instance, the downloading of an HD movie in mere seconds while airborne.
This technological advancement, developed under the ESA’s ScyLight program, holds the promise of delivering high-speed internet access to travelers on both aircraft and maritime vessels in the future. Moreover, it will furnish secure and dependable communication links for governmental and military applications.
It is worth noting that China previously set a world record for laser communication with a satellite, broadcasting a signal across a distance of 40,740 kilometers.
