
An international cohort of scientists has identified evidence suggesting an acceleration in worldwide warming trends. The rate at which global temperatures are climbing post-2015 has proven markedly swifter than witnessed in previous decades, as reported by the Bloomberg news service.
According to the researchers’ findings, the planet’s average temperature during the period leading up to 2025 increased by roughly $0.35^\circ\text{C}$ per decade. To offer perspective, the warming pace averaged near $0.2^\circ\text{C}$ per ten years between 1970 and 2015. The study’s authors assert that this marks the first statistically robust confirmation of an increasing rate of global warming.
Recent years have registered as record-breaking in terms of temperature. The three most recent years stand out as the warmest recorded since systematic instrumental measurements began. In 2024, the Earth’s mean temperature temporarily surpassed the $1.5^\circ\text{C}$ benchmark against pre-industrial levels—a critical threshold established within the framework of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Researchers have long concurred that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are the primary driver of global warming. However, it was previously assumed that temperature elevations were proceeding at a relatively constant pace. The extreme heat observed in the last few years prompted scientific speculation that the rate of warming might actually be quickening.
To test this hypothesis, investigators sought to disentangle the long-term climatic trend from natural fluctuations in the climate system. They effectively filtered out the influences of variables such as El Niño cycles, volcanic eruptions, and variations in solar output.
“We aimed to strip away the climate ‘noise’ so that we could observe the authentic, long-term signature of warming,” explained Grant Foster, a statistician and co-author of the research.
Following this adjustment process, the scientists concluded that the intensification of warming is not solely attributable to the exceptionally hot years of 2023 and 2024. Their data indicates that an accelerated temperature rise has been underway roughly since 2015.
The lead researcher, climatologist Stefan Rahmstorf from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, emphasized that future warming trajectories will be directly contingent upon reductions in greenhouse gas releases.
“Should the rate of warming observed over the last decade persist, the long-term crossing of the $1.5^\circ\text{C}$ threshold could materialize even prior to 2030,” he cautioned.
The scientist further stated that the speed at which humanity manages to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels remains the pivotal factor.
