
Microplastics have been detected everywhere—from the deepest parts of the ocean to outer space. Within human bodies too, they infiltrate various regions. A wealth of studies confirms that these microscopic plastic fragments can intensify inflammatory responses, thereby elevating the chances of cardiac issues or stroke.
A portion of these substances is expelled through feces, mainly the larger particles. However, the smaller ones accumulate within the body, and as yet, no method exists for their removal. Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a medical doctor and columnist for the Washington Post, highlighted the locations where these particles are most frequently “hidden.”
While most individuals are aware that heating plastic in a microwave releases chemicals, fewer realize that harmful particles also leach from plastic containers during the freezing and subsequent thawing of food items.
Plastic can also transfer into water from filters, particularly if they are not replaced frequently. Moreover, the pitcher itself “emits” plastic even at ambient room temperature. Therefore, it is preferable to let water settle in a glass jar or, at the very least, transfer it there immediately after filtration.
Ultra-processed foods contain substantial amounts of plastic, but it sometimes lurks in unanticipated sources. For instance, disposable plastic tea bags release over 11 billion particles when steeped. To avoid this significant contamination, one should opt for loose-leaf tea and a tea strainer.
Instant rice contains four times more of this “debris” compared to regular rice. Importantly, rinsing grains reduces microplastic levels by 40%. Significant concentrations are also present in the breading used for nuggets or patties. Furthermore, land-mined salt harbors high concentrations, suggesting that sea salt is a better alternative.
