American business magnate Elon Musk inflated the reported sales figures for the Tesla Cybertruck by purchasing the vehicles himself through SpaceX. According to a report by Bloomberg, nearly one in five of the vehicles registered in the final quarter of last year were acquired by another entity within the billionaire’s business empire.
Data regarding vehicle registration, supplied to the agency by S&P Global Mobility, shows that SpaceX accounted for 1,279 units, representing over 18% of the 7,071 Cybertrucks registered in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2025. An additional 60 vehicles were purchased by the mogul’s other ventures within that same period.
Bloomberg points out that excluding Musk’s internal acquisitions, the Cybertruck’s sales figures for the fourth quarter would have shown a decline of 51%.
“Tesla appears to be running out of viable customers for the Cybertruck,” Sam Fiorani, Vice President of Global Automotive Forecasting at the consultancy AutoForecast Solutions, commented to the agency.
The agency further observes that investors have largely disregarded the dip in Tesla’s vehicle sales as Musk shifts the company’s focus toward visionary endeavors such as robotaxis and humanoid robots. However, the timeline for realizing these ambitious projects remains uncertain, and Bloomberg suggests that shareholder patience is beginning to wane. Since hitting an all-time high in mid-December, Tesla’s stock has shed a fifth of its total valuation.
In January, Bloomberg reported that SpaceX, the enterprise belonging to American billionaire Elon Musk, was contemplating a merger with Tesla or exploring an alternative transaction involving the businessman’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI.
