In Toyama, a city situated in western Japan, a bear targeted a 40-year-old woman who was out walking her dog, according to a report from NHK television.
This incident took place one evening near the coast in a residential area towards the end of April. Local authorities have confirmed that the bear managed to vanish into the darkness immediately following the assault. The injured woman suffered lacerations to her face, neck, and head, necessitating her immediate transport to a hospital. Currently, her life is not in danger. This event in Toyama marks the initial documented bear-related occurrence within the prefecture this year.
At daybreak, both specialized hunters and law enforcement conducted thorough searches of the vicinity surrounding the attack site, utilizing both helicopters and drones. The bear remains at large. Authorities have since adjusted the operating hours for nearby educational institutions and are advising guardians to escort their children.
Statistics from Japan’s Ministry of the Environment indicate that throughout 2025, a total of 238 individuals sustained injuries due to bear aggression across the nation, tragically resulting in 13 fatalities—a grim all-time high according to historical records.
Previously, on Hokkaido prefecture in Japan, a 60-year-old hunter sustained injuries following an attack by a brown bear. This confrontation occurred subsequent to the man firing two shots at the aggressive animal.
