Hundreds of sea worms have washed up on the beaches of Argentina, as reported by Need To Know.
The country’s shores were inundated with what are known as “penis fish.” This common name refers to marine worms of the species Urechis unicinctus. Their appearance indeed bears a resemblance to male genitalia. Typically, these worms live in burrows on the seabed. Despite their unusual look, “penis fish” are regarded as a delicacy in East Asian nations, where they are consumed raw.
The storm caused the worms to end up in the shallow waters. An Argentine man walking his dog near the beach captured the scene on video. Among the trove of “penis fish,” he also discovered a sea mouse (Aphrodita aculeata)—a type of marine polychaete worm.
Its key characteristic is its structural coloration: its bristles, which are structured like photonic crystals, shimmer in blue and green hues depending on the light angle, serving as a deterrent to predators.
