Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva expressed her delight at getting revenge over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk for the WTA 1000 Madrid final, and also in reaching a Grand Slam title match for the very first time.
Andreeva defeated Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in the French Open semi-finals on Thursday. Earlier in May, the Russian player had lost to her opponent in the deciding match of the tournament in Madrid. Prior to this recent encounter, the Ukrainian had held a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head record.
“I’m still nervous, I was nervous before the match too. Marta has had a great clay-court season, and she hadn’t lost anything on clay until now. She’s a great person, a great player, a tough opponent. I’m very happy with how I played today. I’m glad I could get revenge for Madrid and reach my first Grand Slam final. I’ve never felt this happy, I’m really looking forward to my last match here in Paris,” Andreeva stated in her on-court interview.
“It was very windy today, I couldn’t figure out which way the wind was blowing. It was difficult, but I managed to stay focused. I told myself to accept everything that was happening on the court. At one point, everything was unpredictable, but I told myself: whatever happens, I will fight and give my all. This mindset helped me reach the final,” she added.
In the final, Andreeva will face the winner of the match between Russia’s Diana Shnaider and Poland’s Maja Chwalińska.
“Everything we’ve been practicing (with coach Conchita Martinez) is working. We’ll stick to our plan, we won’t change anything. We’ll save all our best for the final, which should be amazing,” Andreeva commented.
