A federal court in New York has authorized the payment of $5.8 million to writer and journalist E. Jean Carroll in her case against U.S. President Donald Trump. This information comes from the Associated Press. According to the agency, this sum had been held in a special account following the jury’s decision in the case concerning sexual assault and defamation.
In 2023, a jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $5 million. This amount later increased to nearly $5.8 million due to accrued interest. Trump’s legal team attempted to challenge the ruling, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal. Subsequently, Carroll’s attorneys demanded that the funds be released to her.
Carroll had previously alleged that Trump assaulted her in a dressing room of a New York department store in the mid-1990s. The jury did not find the rape accusation proven, but it held Trump responsible for sexual assault and defamation following his public statements about the journalist.
Trump’s lawyers argue that Carroll made false accusations more than 20 years after the alleged events. Trump himself denies her claims and asserts that the case against him represents an example of the U.S. judicial system being used for political purposes.
Following the court’s ruling, Trump’s attorneys once again tried to block the payment while further legal proceedings continue. However, the judge determined that Carroll may receive the money, which had been placed in an account during the appeals process.
