After a year of negotiations and agonizing deliberation, Leonardo DiCaprio has finally agreed to participate in the sequel to Michael Mann’s iconic film “Heat 2,” with filming set to begin in November 2026. According to insider sources, DiCaprio has been cast as Chris Shiherlis, a role originally played by Val Kilmer in the original movie.
It’s worth noting that over the past six months, DiCaprio wavered between two roles—Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Chris. The decision hinged on the actor’s schedule: Mann’s production is planned for six to seven months with constant travel between countries. However, Chris’s role demands more screen time than Neil’s character, and DiCaprio’s approval signals his intention to fully immerse himself in the project.
Meanwhile, the cast is filling out with major names: Al Pacino’s role will be taken over by Christian Bale, who will play detective Vincent Hanna. The main villain—a new character named Otis Wardell, introduced in Mann’s prequel novel—will be portrayed by Adam Driver. Jason Clarke is tipped to play veteran intermediary Nate (originally Jon Voight).
According to the source, Steven Graham is being considered for the legendary Neil McCauley role. A massive casting search is also underway for Charlene (previously Ashley Judd), with a shortlist featuring “several top-tier stars.”
The initial budget of $200 million alarmed Warner Bros., causing the project to move to Amazon/MGM, where the sum was trimmed to a reasonable $170 million. Yet this hasn’t stopped Mann from thinking big. The 83-year-old director confirmed that filming will span Los Angeles, Chicago, Paraguay, and Singapore. In California alone, production will take 77 days.
