The United States Navy’s program to build Zumwalt-class stealth destroyers cost Washington 27 billion dollars. The damage caused by this initiative was assessed in a publication by 19FortyFive.
It is noted that the cost of the ships increased as the program progressed. Initially, the Navy wanted 32 Zumwalt-class vessels, but the planned series was repeatedly scaled back. Over the course of 20 years, the Navy received only three ships of this class.
“The greatest harm this ship inflicted on the United States was in financial costs,” the publication writes. Washington spent approximately 27 billion dollars on the project. Of that amount, ten billion were allocated solely for research and development work.
Each destroyer cost the U.S. Navy roughly 9.5 billion dollars. The author pointed out that a modern Arleigh Burke-class destroyer of the third series, which also carries Tomahawk missiles, costs 2.6 billion.
Earlier in July, Defense News reported that the U.S. Navy feared attacks on nuclear submarines by drones or anti-tank missiles. The Navy announced a tender for new technology to protect submarines.
