Japanese authorities are preparing for a catastrophic earthquake in the capital – a council has been established to manage the disposal of construction debris and rubble. This was reported by the NHK television channel.
According to the scenario being rehearsed by rescue teams and other services, a powerful seismic event in Tokyo could result in 18,000 fatalities, while 402,000 buildings would be either partially or completely destroyed.
It will be necessary to rapidly clear more than 90 million tons of construction waste and debris from the streets.
The Ministry of the Environment, in collaboration with the administrations of Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures, has set up a council tasked with coordinating the actions of emergency services during such a disaster.
