Construction workers stumbled upon a hidden safe and immediately notified the client of their discovery.
Workers made an unexpected find during renovation work in the Belgian town of Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde. A safe containing gold nuggets, coins, and bars worth approximately €9 million was discovered inside a basement wall.
According to RIA Novosti, the treasure was found by employees of a construction firm in the building of the East Flanders General Social Welfare Centre.
While dismantling a basement wall, the builders came across the hidden safe and immediately informed the client. Police arrived at the scene, seized the gold, and placed it in a secure location.
The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office must now establish the origin of the discovered hoard and determine its rightful owner. So far, no one has come forward to the authorities.
