
Geely Holding plans to begin the pilot rollout of solid-state batteries in vehicles across its brands in 2027. The most advanced version of the battery will deliver a specific energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg, potentially enabling electric vehicles to travel over 1,000 km on a single charge.
Geely is set to begin real-world testing of the technology in 2026. Following validation in 2027, the batteries will be installed in limited batches on vehicles from the holding company’s ecosystem—which includes Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Smart, Proton, Farizon, and other brands. However, it has not yet been specified which models will be the first to receive the new batteries.
Geely is developing several variants of solid-state batteries with varying specific energy densities. The flagship version targets 500 Wh/kg. For comparison, Geely’s current liquid-electrolyte “Golden Brick” cells offer a specific energy of approximately 250 Wh/kg at the cell level.
Geely estimates that electric vehicles equipped with the new batteries could match the driving range of diesel-powered vehicles, with a target of over 1,000 km per charge. The higher specific energy density theoretically allows for this extended range without a proportional increase in battery weight.
US-based Dow Chemical is one of Geely’s partners in materials development. The company previously developed a specialized adhesive for solid-state battery cells that remains stable across a temperature range of -40°C to +120°C.
However, the mass adoption of fully solid-state batteries in electric vehicles is not expected in 2027. CATL previously rated its technology at only level four on the nine-point Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale, although the company plans to move on to full-scale prototypes and subsequent certification. In other words, 2027 is likely to mark a phase of limited testing and pilot deployment rather than full-scale mass production.
