
Scientists have discovered a previously unknown mechanism by which the adult brain can repair itself. Researchers at the University of Zurich used real-time microscopy to observe living mice and found that specialized support cells called astrocytes can regenerate after damage. Instead of just dividing in place, these cells send newly formed daughter cell nuclei gliding long distances through their long, star-shaped extensions directly into the damaged area. This allows the astrocyte network to be repopulated and functional connections to be restored. The finding overturns decades of assumptions about the limited regenerative capacity of the adult brain and could pave the way for new therapies to support recovery from injuries or neurodegenerative diseases.
