The U.S. National Security Agency, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have issued a joint warning regarding hacker attacks on Siemens equipment. The S7 series of industrial controllers—which manage pumps, valves, and other mechanisms at water treatment plants, factories, and energy facilities—are the targets.
According to authorities, attackers are scanning the internet for devices that are connected to the network without protection or are running outdated software. Hackers are also utilizing AI to create malicious scripts that allow them to gain control over the controllers.
Earlier this year, hackers targeted water supply systems in at least seven states; in Minnesota alone, approximately 36 municipal facilities were affected.
Siemens has not yet issued an official comment.
