Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli achieved a sensational victory at his home Italian Grand Prix in Monza. After starting only in 19th place due to poor qualifying, the 20-year-old Italian made up 18 places and overtook teammate George Russell at the end of the race, giving the German team a one-two victory.
This result was historic: a Formula 1 victory from 19th place hadn’t been achieved since 1954. Antonelli also became the first Italian driver since 1966 to win his home World Championship race.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen rounded out the podium, finishing almost 15 seconds behind the winner. McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri followed, while Lewis Hamilton, driving a Ferrari, finished sixth. The biggest disappointment for the home crowd was the retirement of Charles Leclerc, who crashed his car in the opening laps of the race. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll also failed to complete the race.
