The US Navy’s newest warship, the Santa Barbara, faces the risk of catastrophic failure because its engines have exceeded their rated service life. This information comes from the agency’s tender documentation.

The document states that all four engines are currently operating beyond their maximum service hours; without immediate maintenance, a catastrophic failure could occur.
The issue concerns the ship’s two main diesel propulsion engines and two shipboard diesel generators. Military officials noted that urgent intervention by specialists is required to avert threats to the ship’s combat readiness and the safety of the crew.
The documentation specifies that the emergency work must be completed by October 11, 2026. The US Navy has awarded a contract for the urgent inspection and repair of the propulsion system to Epsilon Systems Solutions. No open tender was held; the company was designated as the sole source provider.
Previously, eight service members attempted suicide aboard the US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which had been deployed for US military operations in the Middle East. The vessel set a modern record for the longest continuous deployment at sea—286 days.
