Didier Drogba, the former striker for the Ivory Coast national team, Chelsea, and Galatasaray, has been awarded the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal at Harvard University in recognition of the humanitarian work he and his foundation have carried out for many years.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the great honor of being chosen as a recipient of this prestigious medal. This award recognizes not only my football career but, more importantly, the humanitarian efforts that my team and I have been fully committed to for many years through the Didier Drogba Foundation.
This honor is particularly meaningful as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of a historic call for peace in Khartoum. Back then, my national team teammates and I used the Ivory Coast’s qualification for its first-ever World Cup to call for an end to the war that was tearing our beloved country apart.
Twenty years later, this award serves as an important reminder that football is much more than just a game. It has the power to bring people together, serve as a voice for peace, and offer hope to future generations.
I am deeply moved, truly humbled, and immensely grateful for this honor. It inspires me and my team to continue our work to change people’s lives for the better,” Drogba wrote on social media.
