Four contests from both the Mexican men’s and women’s football leagues have been postponed indefinitely due to the unrest stemming from the operation to detain the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Specifically, official channels for the national football championships have announced the postponement of the Mexican Men’s League seventh-round fixture between Querétaro and Juárez. This game was originally scheduled for Monday in Santiago de Querétaro. The rescheduled date and time will be communicated at a later stage.
Information has also emerged regarding the postponement of the Women’s League tenth-round match between Guadalajara and América, which was set to take place in Guadalajara. Furthermore, two matchups from the seventh round of the nation’s men’s second division have been pushed back: the game between Tapatío and Tlaxcala in Tepatitlán de Morelos, and the fixture involving Alebrijes de Oaxaca (“Jaguares Bravos”) and Correcaminos in the Tampico – Ciudad Madero metropolitan area. All these matches were initially slated for February 23rd.
Separately, the Mexican national team is scheduled to play a friendly against Iceland in Querétaro on Wednesday, but the country’s football federation has not yet provided an update on whether that status might change as of the time of this report.
Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense reported on Sunday that an army operation was conducted to apprehend the head of the dominant cartel, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Rubén Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” who reportedly succumbed to injuries while being transported to Mexico City. Following this, acts of arson involving vehicles, road blockades, and assaults on security forces erupted in scores of cities and municipalities across a minimum of eight states.
