
Researchers from Australia’s Monash University undertook a study that determined a prior infection nearly doubles the likelihood of a stroke in children. The authors of this study detailed this phenomenon in the journal Neurology.
The team of academics examined data from the Vaccine Safety Health Link system, which comprises medical records for residents of Victoria, encompassing details on immunizations, infections, and hospital admissions. Over a seven-year period, the investigators identified 571 instances of stroke among children. Although this condition is uncommon (occurring once per 18,000 individuals), its outcomes are severe, ranging from enduring disability to fatality.
Strokes were observed more frequently in boys under the age of one. Data analysis confirmed that in children following a serious infection, stroke risks roughly doubled within 60 days. Furthermore, this elevated danger persisted for an additional six months thereafter.
The scientists cite meningitis, encephalitis, sepsis, and lower respiratory tract infections as the most perilous infections acting as triggers. A correlation was also found with gastrointestinal illnesses, influenza, and the respiratory syncytial virus. However, the scientists did not establish a significant link between recent vaccination and stroke incidence in children.
The research demonstrated that stroke is not solely a concern for the elderly population. Medical practitioners and guardians should remain vigilant for alarming indicators such as breathing difficulties, seizures, and refusal to eat.
