Ascorbic acid is frequently touted as a “cure-all” for bolstering immunity and addressing various other health concerns. However, moderation is key. Excessive intake can lead to diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and cramping, and for males, it increases the likelihood of kidney stone formation. Specialists from Macquarie University’s School of Science in Australia shared these insights with The Conversation.
It is true that Vitamin C functions as a potent antioxidant, safeguarding cells against damage. It enhances the immune system’s capabilities, aids the body in iron absorption, and plays a part in wound repair. Moreover, this vitamin is indispensable for collagen synthesis; this protein is crucial for binding tissues and forms a structural component of skin and gums.
Human bodies are incapable of producing this vitamin internally; therefore, it must be obtained exclusively through diet. Data suggests that roughly 40% of our typical Vitamin C intake comes from vegetables, 19% from berries and fruits, and an additional 29% from juices.
For adults, the upper tolerable limit for intake is set at 2000 mg per day. Being water-soluble, any quantities not absorbed are excreted via urine and do not accumulate in the body. Despite this, overly high doses can still sometimes trigger adverse reactions.
Particular caution is advised for men suffering from pre-existing kidney conditions. Since the compound is cleared by the kidneys, impairment in their function can cause it to build up in the system, thereby promoting stone development.
For the majority of the population, supplementation with Vitamin C is unnecessary. Adequate amounts are readily available from sources such as citrus fruits, berries, tomatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, and kale.
Furthermore, it has been noted that there is a lack of conclusive evidence demonstrating that Vitamin C supplements are effective in preventing or curing numerous ailments. In certain scenarios, the potential risks associated with taking these supplements might outweigh any probable benefits.
