
A nightly fasting window lasting between 13 and 14 hours, separating breakfast and dinner, might reduce the likelihood of developing age-related chronic conditions. This conclusion was reached by researchers from Wenzhou Medical University, with their findings appearing in the journal Nutrition Journal (NutJ).
Over 900 individuals aged 60 and above participated in this study. The scientists examined the relationship between meal timing, the length of the overnight food abstinence period, and what is termed “healthy aging”—a state characterized by the absence of major chronic illnesses (such as diabetes and heart disease), cognitive decline, and depressive symptoms.
The analysis revealed that individuals maintaining an inter-meal pause of approximately 13 to 14 hours displayed the most favorable health outcomes. This schedule ensures a substantial recovery period for the body between the evening meal and the morning meal.
Furthermore, the timing of the meals themselves proved significant. Those most likely to enjoy good health habits consumed their breakfast early in the morning—between six and seven o’clock—and finished dinner relatively early, from 5 PM to 6 PM. Shifting these meal times earlier or later was associated with poorer health metrics.
The researchers attribute this positive effect to the influence on circadian rhythms—the body’s intrinsic biological clock that governs metabolism, brain function, and inflammatory responses.
The study’s authors suggest that establishing a consistent dietary schedule could serve as an uncomplicated and readily accessible method for maintaining well-being during advanced age. Nevertheless, the scientists stress the necessity of further research to solidify these preliminary findings.
