The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is implementing novel regulations set to be active for the 2026 World Cup tournament.
The organization is introducing five distinct modifications.
A player being substituted must exit the pitch within a ten-second window. Should this time limit be exceeded, the replacement player entering the game will be mandated to wait an additional sixty seconds before participation. Teams will be allotted a maximum of five seconds for executing throw-ins and goal kicks.
When attending to a player’s medical needs, if the situation does not involve an infraction warranting a card, the injured player must leave the field for one minute. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will now possess the authority to intervene concerning disputed corner kicks and instances involving a second yellow card issuance. Furthermore, only the designated captain, wearing the armband, will henceforth be permitted to approach the referee for clarifications.
The World Cup event is scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, spanning from June 11th through July 19th. Previously, reports emerged suggesting that, given the heightened tension in the Middle East conflict and the involvement of the US, the Iranian national team might contemplate withdrawing from the World Cup participation. Subsequently, it was reported that discussions are underway within Iran with FIFA to potentially relocate the Iranian team’s matches from the US venues to those in Mexico.
