The pivotal moment was the outcome of a game where the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in a shootout, with a final score of 3-2. This victory propelled the Flyers to 96 points, placing them out of reach for Washington, which currently holds 93 points with just one remaining fixture in the regular schedule.
Consequently, the team representing the US capital will miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs tournament for the first time in three seasons. In the opening round of the postseason, Philadelphia is set to face the Pittsburgh Penguins.
