The hacking collective known as ShinyHunters has publicly claimed responsibility for gaining illicit access to sensitive Rockstar Games information residing within a Snowflake cloud environment, according to a report by hackread.com. The nefarious actors disseminated a ransom demand through the dark web. They are threatening to release the pilfered data, which reportedly includes details about the ongoing development of the game GTA 6, should their payment demands not be met.
“Pay up, or we leak the data. This is your final notice. The deadline is April 14, 2026, after which we will disseminate the information and cause you a number of irritating issues,” stated the ultimatum issued by the cybercriminals.
The breach did not occur via a direct intrusion but rather through a third-party SaaS platform named Anodot. The cybercriminals successfully exfiltrated authentication tokens that served as credentials for accessing linked Snowflake accounts. This allowed the attackers to operate masquerading as legitimate users, facilitating their evasion of detection for an extended duration.
Security professionals have pointed out that several prominent corporations have previously fallen victim to this exact type of compromise. Rockstar Games now faces a difficult choice to avoid becoming the focal point of another high-profile scandal within the gaming sector.
Previously, ShinyHunters executed a cyberattack targeting the cloud servers belonging to the European Commission. In that incident, they managed to steal 340 gigabytes of confidential material, encompassing personal information of EU officials, their correspondence records, and email addresses.
