Authorities in Maryland report that a professional cornhole player fatally wounded a passenger, Bradrick Wells, following an altercation inside his vehicle and fled before being apprehended.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office stated that the professional cornhole player, who holds the distinction of being the first four-time amputee to compete in the American Cornhole League, fatally shot the front-seat passenger while operating the automobile during an argument.
Dayton James Webber, age 27, was subsequently arrested and accused by Albemarle County, Virginia police as a fugitive from justice, according to a press release from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
Charles County is seeking his extradition from Virginia and has indicated that he will face charges including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and related offenses.
Webber did not immediately respond to an email request for comment.
In a 2023 essay for the “Today” show, Webber detailed how doctors amputated his limbs when he was 10 months old to ensure his survival after a severe blood infection.

His medical team allotted him only a three percent chance of survival, he wrote.
Webber was already recognized beyond Maryland by 2010, when ESPN featured him as a promising wrestler and football player at the age of 12.
Webber transitioned to become a professional cornhole player—a game where participants toss beanbags through a hole in a slanted wooden platform to score points.
Webber pulled over after the shooting in La Plata, Maryland, and asked the two rear-seat passengers to help remove the injured person, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The witnesses declined, exited the vehicle, and flagged down police officers.
Webber fled the scene with the victim still inside the car, the Sheriff’s Office shared. Two hours later, a resident of Charlotte Hall, roughly ten miles away, reported finding a body in their yard.
The Sheriff’s Office did not specify the exact mechanism by which Webber discharged the weapon while driving.
Officers located the victim, identified as 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells of Waldorf, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The American Cornhole League issued a statement on its Facebook page acknowledging awareness of the charges involving Webber but affirmed it would not offer comment on what it termed an “active legal situation” during ongoing court proceedings.
