The morning of April 10th nearly turned tragic for a local family in Whittier, California. A massive chunk of ice, falling from the sky, punched through the roof of a residential building and landed directly onto the living room sofa, precisely where no one had been moments before.

The homeowner, Ider Grau, recounted that he first mistook the impact for an explosion due to the sheer force of the collision. The man was dozing in a bedroom at the time, which likely saved his life: the several-kilogram chunk of dirty ice plummeted straight into the living room, a space where he frequently relaxes.
“Had I been on that couch, I would have surely been crushed flat,” the man stated.
His words were reported by People magazine. The startled owner, Tania Magana, upon discovering the icy debris and the gaping hole in the ceiling, immediately contacted local authorities.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn promptly submitted an inquiry to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), demanding a thorough investigation. According to Hahn, such instances of “ice bombardment” are uncommon, yet every occurrence poses a direct danger to human lives.
The Magana family conducted their own small-scale inquiry: flight tracking data indicated that a passenger liner was traversing their area at the time of the incident. The woman prudently placed the ice mass into the freezer—serving as material evidence. She noted that the ice emits a highly unpleasant odor, which might suggest it originated from a technical source.
The FAA confirmed receipt of the complaint and assured that they would look into the matter. Specialists will now face the task of pinpointing the projectile’s source: whether it was a malfunctioning aircraft lavatory system, icing on fuel tanks, or some other technical anomaly. Temporarily, the hole in the roof has been patched with building materials, but the owner confessed that now every aircraft flying overhead triggers a panic attack, fearing a recurrence of this nightmare.
