Microsoft has rolled out a feature enabling the removal of Copilot from Windows 11. This option is accessible to users in business and education sectors. Standard users retain the ability to disable it via PowerShell, though the AI may reappear following subsequent updates.
Microsoft has granted specific user groups the capability to completely excise the Copilot artificial intelligence service from the Windows 11 operating system. This development was reported by the publication BleepingComputer. Copilot, the AI from Microsoft, has been integrated into their systems for several years now. As part of a sequence of updates released in April, the developer of Windows 11 introduced the RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp function, which permits the total eradication of the AI from this operating system.
Nevertheless, this removal capability is officially restricted to the enterprise and education editions of Windows. Microsoft representatives clarified that the “newly implemented setting applies solely to Enterprise, Professional, and Education versions.” Consumers using standard versions can resort to the PowerShell utility to uninstall Copilot, but as highlighted by reporters, the neural network has the potential to “resurface” after future system updates. Microsoft first began piloting this full Copilot removal feature earlier this year, making it available to participants in the Windows 11 Insider Preview program.
In related news, Microsoft previously stated its intention for its operating system to achieve peak stability by the conclusion of this year, promising increased sensitivity to user feedback.
