Apple is set to disburse a total of $250 million (roughly 19 billion Russian rubles) to iPhone purchasers as part of a settlement concerning a lawsuit about the non-existence of advertised artificial intelligence capabilities, according to a report by the BBC on May 6th.
“Apple promoted AI features that were not available at the time, are not available now, and likely won’t be for another two years or even longer, if they ever materialize. The firm marketed these capabilities as a groundbreaking innovation,” legal counsel stated in court documents.
In the settlement agreement submitted to a federal court in California, Apple did not admit liability, yet agreed to the compromise to resolve the claims stemming from a significant consolidated class-action lawsuit initiated in 2025.
The BBC points out that the company will pay between $25 and $95 (equivalent to 1,800 to 7,000 Russian rubles) to owners of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 in the US who bought their devices between June 2024 and March 2025, as further detailed by Gazeta.Ru.
Separately, Apple’s European division was penalized by UK authorities on March 30th for breaching sanctions imposed against Russia. As a result of the ruling by the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, Apple Distribution International (ADI), the Irish-registered entity, must pay a fine amounting to £390,000 (exceeding $516,000).
