The match concluded with a scoreline of 1:6, 6:4, 7:5, favoring Medvedev, who is the 7th seed in the competition. The Spanish player had entered the main draw as a lucky loser. In the semifinal round, the Russian will face the world number one, Jannik Sinner of Italy.
Medvedev is 30 years old and is currently ranked 9th in the ATP rankings, boasting 23 career singles titles under the organization’s banner. The athlete previously held the world number one position for 16 weeks in 2022. In 2021, Medvedev secured victories at both the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup while representing the Russian national team. The Russian has reached six Grand Slam finals throughout his career, succeeding in winning only the US Open in 2021.
Landaluce is 20 years old and holds the 94th position in the global rankings. The Spaniard has yet to claim an ATP tournament title throughout his professional journey.
The event in Rome falls under the “Masters” category, second in prestige only to the Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals. This competition is played on a clay surface and is scheduled to conclude on May 17th. The total prize money available exceeds €8.2 million. The reigning champion is Carlos Alcaraz from Spain, who withdrew from this year’s event due to an injury. Among Russian tennis players, Medvedev is a past winner, having triumphed in Rome in 2023.
