Samsung smartphone owners have reported a burning smell emanating from their S Pen styluses. The cause of this issue has been investigated by the authors at BGR.
These styluses are integrated into all of Samsung’s current Galaxy Ultra phone models and are utilized for tasks such as note-taking, launching applications, and app control.
Samsung representatives have stated that the distinct odor can arise from the plastic or rubber materials used in the stylus’s manufacturing process. Additionally, the S Pen’s housing might overheat when the device is encased within a phone cover, in close proximity to the smartphone’s internal components. The stylus, however, reportedly retains all its core functionalities despite this smell.
“The burning smell originating from the Samsung S Pen doesn’t necessarily indicate that the device has burned out. Rather, it’s akin to the harmless aroma of plastic and car upholstery after exposure to sunlight,” the publication explains.
Users are advised to be more vigilant regarding any burning smells that might come from the phone itself. The device could malfunction due to voltage fluctuations caused by the use of inexpensive charging cables or during charging amidst a thunderstorm. Furthermore, a smell resembling nail polish remover can occur if a lithium-ion battery leaks.
