American Airlines has announced a significant overhaul of its in-flight communication system: commencing in 2027, the airline will begin equipping its narrow-body aircraft with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet.
The installation of this equipment is slated to commence in the first quarter of 2027 and will encompass over 500 Airbus aircraft. This initiative includes both aircraft currently in service and new deliveries such as the Airbus A321XLR and Airbus A321neo, which the airline is still awaiting.
The Starlink Aviation Terminal, a specialized version of the system, will be utilized for connectivity. According to the company’s statements, this terminal is capable of delivering data transfer speeds of up to 1 Gbps per antenna. This enhanced capability is expected to enable passengers to seamlessly utilize streaming services, video calls, cloud-based applications, and other internet functionalities without significant limitations during their flights.
American Airlines asserts that the new system is designed to provide reliable internet access on domestic and short-haul international routes, covering nearly the entire duration of the flight, from the aircraft’s departure from the gate to its arrival at the destination.
Currently, American Airlines stands as the world’s largest airline carrier based on transport volume, operating more than 6,000 daily flights to 350 destinations across over 60 countries.
