In Brazil, a tiger shark severed the leg of 19-year-old Vitoria de Lima Santos while she was swimming close to shore, according to a report from the newspaper Metropoles.
The article’s author highlighted that the shark’s assault on the young woman occurred just one day after an 11-year-old boy was attacked. This marine predator bit Santos on the leg near Boa Viagem beach in the city of Recife.
Bystanders promptly summoned both lifeguards and police officers to the scene. The young woman was brought ashore, where a medical professional applied a tourniquet to her right leg, successfully halting the bleeding. The injured individual was then rushed to the hospital for urgent care.
“She experienced severe hemorrhagic shock and underwent a blood transfusion, with more likely to be needed. Another concern for all patients bitten by animals is the risk of infection,” stated the hospital director.
He further elaborated that the timely application of the tourniquet was life-saving for the young woman. However, her right leg sustained such extensive injuries from the shark’s teeth that it had to be amputated at the thigh.
