Senior US officials have engaged in preliminary discussions with major artificial intelligence firms regarding the potential for the government to acquire stakes in their businesses, NOTUS reported on Thursday, citing informed sources.
According to the publication, the possibility of companies voluntarily ceding shares to the state was discussed.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman held conversations about this concept with high-ranking representatives of the Trump administration, NOTUS states. Notably, the rival company Anthropic was not involved in discussions concerning the transfer of ownership to the government.
Proceeds generated from such investments could be allocated towards public welfare initiatives, including the distribution of dividends to American households, the report indicates.
These discussions are taking place amidst OpenAI and Anthropic’s preparations for initial public offerings (IPOs). The creator of ChatGPT is reportedly preparing to confidentially file its IPO paperwork, while Anthropic, the developer of the Claude model, already submitted a confidential IPO application in the US on Monday.
