During a court hearing, U.S. Department of Justice attorney Yaakov Roth stated that courts would have been unable to halt U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration if it had swiftly demolished the Statue of Liberty with a bulldozer. Politico reported on this statement.
Judge Patricia Millett posed this question to the DOJ representative while discussing the administration’s stance in a case concerning the construction of a ballroom at the White House.
“If the government decided to very quickly demolish the Statue of Liberty with a bulldozer… would nothing be able to be done?” the judge inquired.
“I think that’s correct, yes,” Roth responded.
According to the publication, judges expressed doubts about the Trump administration’s position that courts cannot stop a project from being implemented, even if it is later deemed unlawful.
