
Paleontologists have confirmed that Praearcturus gigas, a creature that inhabited shallow waters during the Devonian period 415 million years ago, is the largest scorpion ever discovered. The research team’s findings have been published in the journal Palaeontology.
Measuring approximately 1 meter in length and possessing claws exceeding 16 cm, Praearcturus gigas would have been a formidable predator, likely hunting in floodplains around 415 million years ago.
Initially described as an isopod in 1871, and subsequently compared to various arthropod groups, it was redescribed in the 1980s with limited illustrations as a giant scorpion.
“When we think of giant arthropods, people often picture Carboniferous rainforests with giant millipedes or dragonfly-like insects from later in Earth’s history,” stated lead author Richard Howard, curator of fossil arthropods at the Natural History Museum in London. “But Praearcturus gigas lived at least 50 million years earlier, long before trees evolved, when life on land was just starting to take hold. Confirming this animal as a scorpion fundamentally alters our understanding of how and when these creatures evolved to such extraordinary sizes.”
In the new study, Howard and his colleagues, employing modern analytical techniques and comparisons with fossil species, have proposed that Praearcturus gigas is indeed a scorpion.
“Praearcturus gigas has puzzled us paleontologists for over a century,” commented co-author Russell Garwood from the University of Manchester. “By combining specimens from multiple collections and utilizing advanced imaging methods, we’ve been able to gain a clearer picture of this animal than was previously possible, and it’s quite remarkable.”
What makes Praearcturus gigas particularly intriguing is its achievement of immense size during a time when terrestrial life was very limited. Yet, it was a world that somehow managed to sustain a gigantic predator.
To better comprehend this ancient world, the researchers compared the size of fossil scorpions with that of other animals coexisting at the time.
Given its incredible dimensions, it is plausible to infer that it may have been aquatic, a realm where life existed on a grander scale.
Praearcturus gigas existed in the Early Devonian. Only nascent plants and fungi had begun to colonize the landscape, and complex terrestrial ecosystems like forests had yet to emerge.
This implies that, unlike later giant arthropods, this scorpion did not benefit from the high atmospheric oxygen levels associated with the advent of forests.
Instead, its colossal size might be indicative of a world with relatively little competition from other large predators.
This suggests that Praearcturus gigas could have grown to such proportions simply because few other large animals were present, allowing it to dominate its environment in a way that became impossible later on.
Fossil evidence also hints at the possibility that this giant scorpion led a semi-aquatic existence.
“The land-sea boundary at that time was far less clearly defined,” explained co-author Greg Edgecombe from the Natural History Museum in London. “Praearcturus gigas offers us a fascinating glimpse into how early animals adapted to these shifting environmental conditions. It might even reflect a lineage returning to the water after earlier ancestors had already begun to colonize land.”
