The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded to players who exhibit sportsmanship, perseverance, and dedication to hockey. Meanwhile, the Mark Messier Leadership Award recognizes an individual demonstrating outstanding leadership qualities.
Gabriel Landeskog, a Swedish forward for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL), has been honored with two individual awards for the 2025-26 season: the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy and the Mark Messier Leadership Award. This announcement was made by the team’s press service.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is bestowed upon hockey players who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship, perseverance, and devotion to the game. The Mark Messier Leadership Award recipient is a player who showcases prominent leadership within their team, both on and off the ice, and significantly contributes to the growth of hockey in their community.
Landeskog has made history as the first player ever to win both of these accolades simultaneously. His nomination for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy stemmed from his persistent efforts to return to the ice following a severe injury. The Colorado captain underwent knee surgery in 2022, shortly after winning the Stanley Cup. He subsequently missed three seasons, making his return to an NHL game only in October 2025. This season, the Swedish player participated in 60 regular-season games, accumulating 35 points (14 goals and 21 assists). In the playoffs, he recorded 11 points (6 goals and 5 assists) in 13 games. The Avalanche, who finished as the top seed in the regular season, were defeated in the Western Conference Final by Vegas, losing the series 0-4. Additionally, the forward represented Sweden in the Winter Olympics in Italy, where his national team was eliminated in overtime in the quarterfinals by the eventual champions, Team USA.
Off the ice, Landeskog actively participated in numerous charitable events and provided support to various foundations across Colorado.
Throughout his NHL career, the Swedish forward has exclusively played for the Colorado Avalanche, who drafted him second overall in 2011. In the 2011-12 season, Landeskog received the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie. He has also been a two-time World Champion with the Swedish national team.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy has been presented annually since the 1967-68 season. Last year’s recipient was Sean Monahan of the Columbus Blue Jackets. No Russian players have ever won this award; however, Alexander Ovechkin of Washington was nominated for it this season. The Mark Messier Leadership Award was first given out in the 2006-07 season, initially on a monthly basis, with the winner selected by the six-time Stanley Cup champion himself. Ovechkin was the recipient of this award following last season.
