Excess sugar in the daily diet is instantly absorbed by the body, placing severe strain on the pancreas and increasing the risk of diabetes. This was stated to the NEWS.ru portal by Oleg Medvedev, head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Sugar is a nutrient with an almost completely broken-down food matrix that requires no effort from the body to digest. Its rapid absorption leads to a sharp spike in blood glucose levels, followed by an equally swift drop, causing feelings of fatigue and intense hunger.
Regular consumption of sugary products in large quantities is a key factor in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. At the same time, the expert emphasized that a whole fruit and a glass of juice with the same sugar content have entirely different effects on human metabolism.
