On June 24, Canadian striker Promis David set a new record at the World Cup by scoring a goal faster than Russian player Artem Dzyuba did in 2018.
In the final group stage match against Switzerland (1:2), David came off the bench and found the net just 71 seconds later. This is the fastest goal ever scored by a player from the host nation after entering the game as a substitute. The previous record was held by Dzyuba, who scored against Saudi Arabia 90 seconds after coming onto the pitch during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Despite the loss to Switzerland, the Canadian national team secured their place in the knockout stage of Group B. Finishing in second place with four points, the team advanced to the World Cup playoffs for the first time in their history.
Earlier on June 24, the national teams of Switzerland and Canada both qualified for the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup.
