Uruguay’s national team lost to Spain in the third round of the group stage at the 2026 World Cup.
The Group H match took place in Guadalajara (Mexico) and ended with a 1-0 score in favor of the Spaniards. Midfielder Álex Baena found the net past 40-year-old Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who failed to hold onto the ball after the Spaniard’s shot.
At halftime, Muslera was replaced by Sergio Rochet, who made his debut at the 2026 World Cup.
In the 44th minute, Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered an injury while competing for the ball in the center of the field. The 25-year-old Uruguayan was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
Spain finished the group stage with seven points and advanced to the knockout rounds as group winners.
Uruguay (2 points) finished in third place and ended their tournament run. The Uruguayans have no chance of reaching the top eight third-place teams, which will qualify for the playoffs based on secondary criteria.
