AI-powered notes rely on the Gemini neural network and automate the process of documenting meetings, freeing participants from the distraction of manual text entry.
The tool operates in the background during a video call on the web platform and in the Google Meet mobile app, with the user’s permission. Once activated, it performs several tasks:
Real-time transcription. Gemini converts participants’ spoken words into text, producing a complete meeting transcript.
Summary generation. Based on the transcript, the AI creates a concise meeting summary by highlighting key points and, crucially, recording main tasks and action items.
Automatic saving. When the call ends, all generated notes and summaries are automatically saved as a Google Docs document in the user’s Google Drive cloud storage.
Participant notification. For transparency, all meeting participants receive a notification that automatic recording and transcription are in progress.
After the meeting concludes, the user also gets an email containing a brief summary and a list of AI-identified tasks. This makes it easy to quickly review the discussion outcomes without having to go through the full transcript.
Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers have two ways to activate the feature. During an active call, they can click the pencil icon at the top of the Google Meet window. Alternatively, they can enable automatic note-taking for all future meetings by toggling the relevant setting in Google Meet’s configuration under the “Meeting recordings” section.
Google’s support documentation states that the feature currently supports English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, but only one language at a time.
