Starting in January 2028, Sony will completely halt production of physical discs for new games on its consoles. The corporation officially announced this on the PlayStation Blog page.
The reason behind this move is the rapid growth of digital sales, which have confidently overtaken physical retail. Players are increasingly preferring to download new releases directly from the network. This new policy will affect absolutely all upcoming projects—both from internal studios and third-party developers.
Games scheduled for release in 2026–2027 and earlier will continue to be available on physical media. However, subsequent releases will only be accessible through the PlayStation Store. Physical stores will only carry boxes containing activation codes.
At the same time, the company has decided to permanently shut down the PS Store for older consoles, the PS3 and PS Vita. Everything points to the next-generation PlayStation 6 launching without a disc drive.
