Spain’s national team defeated Belgium in the quarterfinal match and advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup.
For Spain, this is only the third semifinal appearance in the history of the World Cup.
In 1950, when the tournament used a different format, Spain finished in fourth place after reaching the final group stage, and simply making it to that round already counted as a semifinal berth.
In 2010, Spain beat Germany 1-0 in the semifinals and then defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in the final, winning the World Cup for the first time.
