Kenyan Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi has set a new world record in the 1000-meter race at the Diamond League event held in Monaco. The 21-year-old athlete completed the distance in 2 minutes and 11.83 seconds. The previous record belonged to another Kenyan, Noah Ngeny, who posted a time of 2:11.96 back in 1999. It is worth noting that the kilometer run is not part of the official program at world championships or the Olympic Games.
Wanyonyi is also recognized as the Olympic gold medalist and world champion in the 800-meter race.
