Windows computer users have started reporting issues with installing a new security certificate. This was highlighted by the publication Windows Latest.
The media outlet reminded that in October 2026, the Secure Boot certificate for Windows will expire—a certificate designed to prevent the launch of fake drivers, viruses, and malicious bootloaders that could harm the system. Microsoft has already begun rolling out an updated certificate. In early July, it became clear that many users were unable to obtain the new version of Secure Boot due to an error.
Microsoft stated that it has paused the issuance of new certificates for certain personal computers (PCs). The company explained that due to an unknown malfunction, specific devices running Windows cannot receive the update. Microsoft urged users to wait for patches from computer manufacturers that will fix the error.
Windows Latest explained that the current certificate remains valid until October 2026—so using a PC with the old Secure Boot is not dangerous until mid-autumn. “The risk of problems arising from outdated certificates is currently low, but it will likely increase over time,” the authors concluded.
